T4SCL stakeholders Forum
This event is the last of the joint project by Education International and the European Students' Union (ESU) entitled "Time for Student-Centred Learning" (T4SCL), supported by the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme.
The launch of the Student-Centred Learning Toolkit took place on 14 October.
2010 T4SCL Stakeholders Forum Leuven - Student-Centred Learning Toolkit
The project page of "Time for a New Paradigm in Education: Student Centered Learning" (abbreviated T4SCL) ran from December 2009 to November 2010.
While student centered learning is at this moment backed by most educational stakeholders and viewed as a natural outcome, there is as of yet still no well-defined idea on how to make it a reality on the ground.
The joint European Students' Union / Education International project “Time for a New Paradigm in Education: Student Centered Learning" (T4SCL) is based on the long-standing need to clarify and deepen the understanding of the academic community and policy makers' of the practical implications of the recent paradigm shift from teacher to student centered learning. The need for a shift in philosophy is explained by the increasingly diverse profile of the learner, the demand for increased educational quality and the drive to increase equity in learning. ESU and EI have a strong motivation to start the quest for Student Centered Learning (SCL), within the lifelong learning context.
Among project activities, we will survey the opinion of ESU and EI member organisations. Also, we will undertake an extensive desk research process, develop a pool of trainers on student centered learning and a toolkit on implementation of student centered learning practices. All of these will be conducted in a time frame of 12 months from December 2009 to November 2010. The desired outcome is increased capacity to promote a shift in paradigm to student centered learning. More specifically, the project also aims to:
- clarify and unfold the true practical meaning of the SCL concept for policy makers;
- increase the capacity of ESIB/EI members to be active and constructively critical in the design and implementation of SCL systems.
20th European Student Convention
On 16-17 October, the 20th European Student Convention as held and included the TASCL stakeholders Forum.
We reassert the importance of the teaching mission of higher education institutions and the necessity for ongoing curricular reform geared toward the development of learning outcomes. Student-centred learning requires empowering individual learners, new approaches to teaching and learning, effective support and guidance structures and a curriculum focused more clearly on the learner in all three cycles. Curricular reform will thus be an ongoing process leading to high quality, flexible and more individually tailored education paths. Academics, in close cooperation with student and employer representatives, will continue to develop learning outcomes and international reference points for a growing number of subject areas.
Leuven/Louvain-la-Neuve declaration
The purpose of the 20th European Student Convention is to have a final and comprehensive debate on what student centred learning is and on what are the presets for its proper implementation at institutional level.
We aim at gathering together students, staff and other stakeholders from a variety of countries to exchange views, examples of good practice and experiences.
The main expected outcome is a greater understanding by participants of the processes that influence the development of learner centred education, as well as a concrete set of recommendations that can feed into this development work.
